The Mbare Magistrate’s court failed to bring finality to the trial of Stan Zvorwadza, Restoration of Human Rights (ROHR) Zimbabwe Spokesperson who is charged under Section 186 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act with threatening to commit murder and undermining state authority. The judgment was postponed to the 11th of May 2012.

According to Mbare Magistrate, Victoria Mashamba the judgement was postponed because Mashamba had not yet read through the closing submissions from both the Prosecution and Defense.

Equality before the law has become a myth in Zimbabwe’s judiciary system as the system is used to persecute opponents of ZANU PF. Stan Zvorwadza’s trial has been postponed several times under unclear circumstances. The Glenview 29 who are accused of murdering a police officer in Glenview have been in remand for several months with Justice Chinembiri Bhunu postponing indefinitely, judgment on their bail application. This is despite that the six police officers who butchered Shamva mine worker Luxmore Chivambo were granted a meager US$ 50 bail 25 days after their arrests by the courts. This however goes on to show that selective application of the law in Zimbabwe is rife. It is now time for the judicial system in Zimbabwe to become professional and safeguard the right of all citizens to fair trial regardless of their political affiliation.
