BBC presenter arrested in Zimbabwe
A BBC presenter Petroc Trelawny (42) was on 26 May 2012 arrested during the Bulawayo Music Festival in Zimbabwe’s second largest city of Bulawayo for working in Zimbabwe without accreditation.
According to Rose Benton of Zim Vigil in London, Trelawny, a classical music presenter for BBC Radio3 and BBC 2 TV channel was not working at the time of his arrest .
Trelawny suffered a dislocated shoulder following an accidental fall while in police custody and was attended to at a local hospital. British Ambassador to Zimbabwe Deborah Bronnert visited the journalist while he was in custody in Harare where he had been transferred to following his arrest.
According to Bruce McDonald, the administrator of the Zimbabwe Academy of Music, Trelawny had been treated well while in police custody. He was expected to fly out of Zimbabwe on 28 May 2012.
Background
Foreign journalists intending to work in Zimbabwe must seek permission from the Ministry of Information prior to entering the country in terms of the repressive Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA).
